STEP 1 · TRUMPET VALVES FOR BEGINNERS

How the 3 Piston Valves Work

Hold the weight of the trumpet with your left hand (ring finger inside the 3rd-slide ring, thumb in the 1st valve saddle). Rest your right fingertips lightly in a natural C-curve on top of the three pearl valve caps:

  • Valve 1 (Index Finger): Closest to the mouthpiece; lowers pitch 1 whole step.
  • Valve 2 (Middle Finger): Center piston; lowers pitch 1 half step.
  • Valve 3 (Ring Finger): Closest to the bell; lowers pitch 1.5 steps.
STEP 2 · YOUR FIRST 5 NOTES

Start with C4 – D4 – E4 – F4 – G4

Almost every beginning band book starts with these five notes (Concert B♭ through Concert F):

  • Low C4: Open (0) · Sounds as Concert B♭3
  • D4: Valves 1 + 3 · Sounds as Concert C4
  • E4: Valves 1 + 2 · Sounds as Concert D4
  • F4: Valve 1 · Sounds as Concert E♭4
  • Second-Line G4: Open (0) · Sounds as Concert F4
